GoGallery is proud to present the first solo exhibition ‘Everyday is like Sunday ‘ of the photographer Keiichi Nitta coupled with the launching of his first book published by GoBooks ( Italy ) in a limited edition of 500 copies. Before being a photographer, Keiichi Nitta is first and foremost a true jester. Not in the sense of clowning about as a way of making his models more relaxed, but he is literally a clown by nature. He willingly strips off his clothes to lighten the atmosphere around him, and deliberately acts in ways that make people laugh. In this light, it can be said that he is an unusual presence among photographers today. At times, Keiichi becomes part of his own photography. It is true that photographers occasionally make the best subjects. As with Andy Warhol, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Nobuyoshi Araki, Masahisa Fukase, and Tomoko Sawaguchi, the artist’s appearance is both autobiographical, and also a way of showing the ambiguity of one’s identity. Whatever the motive, the photographers turn their camera onto themselves precisely because it is they who can truly and purely cater to the intentions that drive their own work.Keiichi’s daily ritual during his 6 years of being assistant to Terry Richardson was to serve as his boss’s first model of the day in the studio. Recognizing Keiichi’s potential as a model, Terry shot many photos of him. In turn, Keiichi gradually began to enjoy the process of being shot, and continued this trajectory after going freelance and moving back to Japan.
Keiichi Nitta will meet his guests and friends at the opening on Tuesday June 24th 2008 from 7 to 9:30 pm and will be happy to sign copies of his book. For appointments and additional information please contact GoGallery
This show has been generously supported by American Apparel ( Japan ) and Nava Press ( Italy ).
